Breast Reconstruction Q & A

What is breast reconstruction?

Breast reconstruction is surgery to restore your breasts’ shape or size. You may seek the procedure if you’ve undergone a mastectomy or other breast surgery due to cancer. Women may also be born with irregularities of the chest or breast and benefit from breast reconstruction.

Am I a candidate for breast reconstruction?

If you’ve undergone treatment for cancer or have a congenital defect, you may benefit from breast reconstruction. Dr. Baron will ensure that you’ve coped well with your diagnosis and don’t have any existing medical conditions that could compromise healing after surgery.

Breast reconstruction can have side effects such as compromised sensation and scarring. Dr. Baron reviews these potential effects so you fully understand what to expect during and after surgery.

What options for breast reconstruction are available?

The two main categories of breast reconstruction are implant-based, and autologous or flap reconstruction. Dr. Baron may simply suggest a silicone or saline implant to reshape your look.

Autologous flap surgery uses your own tissue to reconstruct the breast. The tissue is skin, fat, or muscle that usually comes from the belly, back, buttocks, or inner thighs to reconstruct the breast.

Dr. Baron takes time to consult with you to determine the type of breast reconstruction that’s best for your health, breast shape, breast size, and desired look.

What happens to the non-reconstructed breast?

Even if just one breast was affected during your cancer surgery, you may choose to have both breasts reconstructed to regain a symmetrical look. One breast may need a slightly different approach in the form of a breast lift, breast reduction, or breast augmentation so the size, shape, and position of both breasts match.

How long is recovery from breast reconstruction surgery?

Following surgery at Breast Body Beauty Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, you’ll have bandages applied to your incisions. Dr. Baron may temporarily place a small tube at the surgical site to drain excess fluid and blood.

She’ll advise you to wear an elastic bandage or support bra to minimize swelling and support the reconstructed area. The surgical team provides you with information about how to care for the surgical site and when you can resume normal activity. You will need to schedule some downtime following breast reconstruction surgery.
