How Does Fat Transfer Work?
Achieving a natural look with Botox® or fillers isn’t always easy, and it's just a temporary fix. If you’re looking for permanent volume and a completely natural look, fat transfer is the way to go.
At Breast, Body, Beauty Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in Atlanta, Georgia, Dr. Aisha Baron offers various cosmetic treatments to help you look your best, including fat transfer.
Dr. Baron is an experienced plastic and reconstructive surgery expert offering liposuction, breast augmentation, and injectables for a confident, youthful appearance.
What is fat transfer?
Fat transfer is a cosmetic surgery that utilizes liposuction to remove fat from areas such as the abdomen or thighs. We then purify the fat before injecting it into places that need more volume.
The goal of fat transfer is to rejuvenate areas that have lost volume due to aging or other factors. It offers a lasting option for restoring volume and plumping areas, boosting confidence.
We utilize fat transfer for multiple purposes, including body contouring to improve the appearance of your butt, hips, or breasts. It’s also a great option for facial rejuvenation, plumping up your cheeks and filling in hollow areas for a youthful glow.
The steps of fat transfer
Fat transfer involves three steps, typically performed under anesthesia. You may need more than one session, depending on your goals and the areas we’re treating. During each session, we follow these three steps:
Harvesting
Harvesting fat from areas such as your abdomen, hips, or buttocks is done through liposuction. We make a tiny incision in the treatment area and use a suction device to loosen and remove the fat. It collects in a container for use in the next step.
Purifying
After we get enough fat to meet your goals, we purify it by placing the fat in a centrifuge to separate fat cells from other substances. When we’re satisfied with the consistency, we remove it from the machine and put it in syringes.
Injecting
The final step of the process is injecting purified fat into the area you want to enhance. We carefully distribute the fat using specialized cannulas to ensure an even and natural appearance.
What to expect after the procedure
Most fat transfer procedures are done on an outpatient basis with minimal downtime, though recovery can vary depending on how much fat is harvested and where it’s transferred. It’s common to need a week or so off from work to recover.
In the first few days, it’s common to have bruising, swelling, and discomfort. It may take several weeks for these side effects to subside, depending on the treatment area and your body's recovery.
It’s important to increase your activities gradually and attend follow-up appointments to ensure proper healing. After a few months, you should see a natural, plumper appearance in the treatment area.
