Rhinoplasty Recovery: What to Expect During the Healing Process

Rhinoplasty Recovery: What to Expect During the Healing Process

Rhinoplasty is a cosmetic surgical procedure that modifies the function or shape of the nose. You can get one for cosmetic or aesthetic reasons, or for breathing issues from a broken nose or deviated septum.

Before undergoing rhinoplasty, it's essential to understand what to expect during and after the procedure. The recovery period is crucial for good results and a nose that you're happy to show off.

At Breast, Body, Beauty Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery in Atlanta, Georgia, Dr. Aisha Baron offers a range of aesthetic procedures, including rhinoplasty. As an experienced plastic and reconstructive surgeon, she helps you through every step of the process.

What happens immediately after rhinoplasty?

Immediately after the procedure, you recover in the post-operative area until you're more awake. You may experience some pain and will likely feel drowsy for the rest of the day.

Most rhinoplasty procedures are performed on an outpatient basis, allowing you to go home the same day. We place a splint on your nose to protect it during the healing process. You may also have internal packing and dressings over the area to keep it clean and dry.

Breathing through your mouth is usually necessary, as swelling makes it difficult to move air through your nose. Swelling and puffiness around your eyes and nose are common immediately after the procedure.

Understanding the initial recovery

The initial recovery period typically occurs within the first two weeks after your procedure. During this time, you need to wear the nasal splint and avoid bumping or touching your nose. It's crucial for a proper recovery.

Avoid blowing your nose, as this can disrupt the healing process, and sneeze with your mouth open. Pain and swelling are common, especially within the first few days. You may also experience bruising under your eyes, which is normal.

You might have pain that we address with medication. You can also take over-the-counter anti-inflammatories to manage inflammatory discomfort.

Most people can return to work within two weeks, depending on the type of job. It's crucial to avoid strenuous activities or heavy lifting during the initial recovery phase.

The intermediate phase of recovery

Over the next few months, you enter the intermediate phase of recovery. Typically, the results of rhinoplasty become visible between two weeks and six months after the procedure. The healing process is generally complete within six weeks of surgery, and swelling usually subsides within a few weeks.

Your breathing will improve over the next few months, and you should be able to breathe normally within a month after surgery. Although swelling decreases, it may linger around the tip of your nose for a few months and be more prevalent in the mornings.

Most people can resume normal activities, including work and exercise, within the first few months. However, it's essential to check with us before taking any action that could affect your outcome.

Final results

After six months, you enter the final recovery period. The results of the procedure become more apparent and pronounced, although some swelling may still be visible.

At the one-year mark, your final results should be noticeable, but it's still essential to protect your nose. It's crucial to wear sunscreen on your nose and shield it from sun damage, as this can compromise the results.

We check in with you during every stage of your recovery to ensure things go smoothly and you get the results you hoped for.
