What to Expect Before and After Microneedling
Smooth, firm skin is a common goal, but aging reduces the production of collagen and elastin, leading to sagging and wrinkles.
What if you could turn back the hands of time with a simple, in-office procedure? It’s possible with microneedling at Breast, Body, Beauty Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in Atlanta, Georgia.
Dr. Aisha Baron utilizes the Vivace® and Morpheus8® radiofrequency (RF) systems for microneedling. These treatments stimulate collagen to enhance skin texture and tone. This is one of several advanced cosmetic options available in our office.
What is microneedling?
Microneedling is a procedure that uses tiny needles to make small punctures in your skin. The needles create controlled micro‑injuries that trigger your skin’s natural healing response, boosting collagen and elastin production.
Collagen and elastin are the key proteins that give skin its structure, smoothness, and firmness. Their production declines with age, but microneedling gives your body an extra boost to increase production.
Microneedling is a minimally invasive outpatient treatment. Patients return home the same day, but must follow aftercare guidelines to support optimal recovery.
We offer both Vivace and Morpheus8 RF microneedling systems to deliver optimal results based on your skin’s needs.
How to prepare for microneedling
Thorough preparation enhances microneedling results and expedites healing. For example, it’s important to drink extra water in the week leading up to treatment to keep your skin resilient.
Other ways to prepare your skin before microneedling include:
- Avoiding UV rays and sun exposure
- Stopping the use of retinoids, exfoliants, and benzoyl peroxide
- Avoiding chemical peels, waxing, or laser treatments
- Letting us know if you take blood thinners or supplements
- Arriving on the day of treatment with a clean face
- Informing us of any active skin conditions
- Shaving 48-72 hours before the procedure if necessary
Most preparations should start a week before the procedure. You may need to stop blood thinners or supplements that increase bleeding two days before your appointment.
What to expect after microneedling
The microneedling procedure typically takes 30-60 minutes. Once we’re finished, we give you aftercare instructions, and you can head home to relax.
Your skin may feel taut, with redness or warmth around the treatment area. Swelling and soreness are also typical immediately after microneedling.
The first day or two are most intense for redness and sensitivity. By day three, expect the redness and swelling to diminish. You may also notice some mild peeling, which is a normal sign that your skin is renewing itself and boosting collagen and elastin.
A week after the procedure, you should notice your skin feels smoother and looks more radiant. Results continue to improve over the following weeks and months as your body rejuvenates your skin.
Avoid sun exposure during recovery. Refrain from makeup for several days and keep your skin clean and moisturized for the best results.
