Breast Lift versus Breast Augmentation: Deciding Which Is Right for You

Breast augmentation with implants, or mammaplasty, has been among the most popular surgical cosmetic procedures since 2006 and was No. 2 in 2022. Not far behind, though, is the breast lift, also known as mastopexy, which took the No. 4 spot.

At Breast Body Beauty Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery in Marietta, Georgia, our breast experts Dr. Aisha Baron and Dr. Olatomide (Tomi) Familusi want you to have the figure of your dreams. That could mean a breast lift, an augmentation, or a combination of both.

Both breast lifts and breast augmentations improve the shape and position of your breasts. How do you know when a lift is your best option, or when augmentation is the way to go? The following questions help you zoom in on the perfect choice for you.

Do you feel droopy?

Some women are born with breasts that lie flat against their chests. Others have perky breasts until they nurse their babies or gravity gets the best of their breast tissue. Candidates for a breast lift may struggle with issues such as:

If your main source of dissatisfaction with your breasts is their position, a breast lift could be your best choice. During a breast lift, your surgeon removes excess skin, repositions your breasts to a higher position, and tightens the surrounding tissues.

The popularity of breasts lifts has grown 70% since 2000. In addition to lifting the breasts, your surgeon reshapes them to be more harmonious and flattering to your figure.

Would you like more volume?

A breast lift can make you look perkier and more youthful, but it doesn’t add any volume or significantly alter the shape of your breasts. If you’d like to have larger breasts, there’s only one choice: breast augmentation.

While in the past, breast implants looked and felt unnatural, today’s implants are soft, natural-looking and lovely. You can choose from a variety of shapes and materials, including:

Each type of implant has its advantages and disadvantages. Our surgeons help you decide which shape and texture implant is best for your needs, too.

Do you need both volume and lift?

For many women, neither a breast lift nor a breast augmentation alone can offer them all of the improvements they seek. If you want more volume but you also have droopy breasts, you may need to combine a breast lift with an augmentation.

In a combination procedure, we first lift your breast and remove redundant tissue. We then insert the implant in each breast and re-attach your areola and nipple so that it’s in a higher, more youthful position.

Considerations for your decision

Whichever procedure you choose, we must first ensure that you’re a good candidate for breast surgery. In addition to reviewing your medical history, we conduct an in-depth physical exam, measure your breasts, and talk to you about your goals.

You can still breastfeed after a breast lift or augmentation; however, nursing may stress your tissues and make your breasts droop, so we may advise you to wait until you’ve finished breastfeeding before changing your breast position or shape.

Both procedures require recovery time. Be sure that your lifestyle can accommodate taking time off from work and household duties.
